OWNERSHIP & MANAGEMENT: The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians acquired Grand Traverse Resort and Spa on March 31, 2003. The Grand Traverse Band received official recognition as a present-day tribal entity on May 27, 1980. Today, the Grand Traverse Band provides career, health, education, social, and heritage programs to its more than 3,500 members.

The Grand Traverse Band has been in the casino gaming business since 1984. In addition to Grand Traverse Resort & Spa, the Tribe also owns and operates Leelanau Sands Casino in Peshawbestown and Turtle Creek Casino in Williamsburg, two small hotels, restaurants, a conference center and a convenience store. LOCATION: The 900-acre resort is situated in the northwest corner of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula along the shores of Lake Michigan’s East Grand Traverse Bay. Just six miles northeast of Traverse City, Michigan, it is a ten-minute drive from Traverse City’s Cherry Capital Airport (TVC).

DESCRIPTION/SENSE OF PLACE: One of the Midwest’s finest full-service, year-round destination resorts and conference centers. Since opening in 1980, the resort has earned numerous distinctions, including a Top 20 Mainland Resort and Top 50 Worldwide Travel Destination ranking by Condé Nast Traveler. Its 600 guest rooms, 85,000 square-feet of versatile, dedicated meeting space, distinctive dining venues, shopping gallery, full-service spa, and championship golf attracts individuals, families and business groups for four full seasons of non-stop activity.

ROOMS DESCRIPTION: The Resort features 600 rooms, suites and condominiums including 238 Hotel, 186 Tower plus approximately 176 condominiums that participate in a rental management program.

Tower: The 17-story Tower opened in 1986. Its 186 spacious rooms and suites feature a number of attractive amenities including wet bar, refrigerator, color cable television with Nintendo, bathroom with Jacuzzi whirlpool tub, hair dryer, makeup mirror and heat lamp.

Hotel: The six-story Hotel's 238 rooms feature color cable television with Nintendo, hair dryer, and television speakers in the bathroom. Hotel rooms are conveniently located within steps of the Resort’s restaurants, lounges, shops and full-service spa.

Condominiums: The Resort offers approximately 176 studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom privately owned condominiums participating in a Rental Management Program. The condos are located in several complexes along the fairways of two championship golf courses and along the sandy shores of East Grand Traverse Bay. The Shores condominium complex features a Beach Club with a private beach, swimming pool, whirlpool, large deck area, dock, water sports and personal watercraft, and food & beverage service.

AMENITIES: A wide variety of guest services and amenities are available including in-room nanny service, licensed daycare, organized children’s activities, electronic game arcade, exercise classes, airport shuttle service and baggage handling.

DINING: From contemporary favorites such as pasta, steaks, and pizza to poolside sandwiches, a variety of culinary delights are offered at the following establishments. Room service is also available.

GOLF: Michigan is America’s Summer Golf Capital® and Grand Traverse Resort & Spa is a haven for golfers. The Resort has three distinguished 18-hole championship courses.

The Bear: A Jack Nicklaus signature course, his first in Michigan, is a distinguished par-72 course with Scottish links-style features.

The Wolverine: A Gary Player signature course, opened in 1999. The Wolverine is Player’s first signature course in the state of Michigan.

Spruce Run: Designed by William Newcomb is an 18-hole, championship, par-70 course winding along the rolling hills overlooking East Grand Traverse Bay.

A Clubhouse accommodating play on all three golf courses debuted in conjunction with The Wolverine. Grand Traverse Resort & Spa is the Midwest resort home of the renowned Jim McLean Golf School. Offering private lessons, group clinics, one-, two- and three-day schools, as well as specialty lessons for women and juniors, the Golf School at Grand Traverse Resort & Spa is Jim McLean's seventh national location.

Jim McLean has gathered the finest instructors from around the country including seven of the Top 100 PGA Teaching Professionals in America. The 2,000 square-foot Jim McLean SUPERSTATION® houses three state-of-the-art, indoor-outdoor hitting bays equipped for video and computer analysis.

RECREATION: The fun and excitement is year-round. In warm-weather months, guests can enjoy tennis at outdoor courts near the Spa Complex and water sports including personal watercraft such as Jet Skis, pedal boats, and kayaks as well as swimming at The Shores Beach Club located on East Grand Traverse Bay.

Winter activities are centered at the resort’s Nordic Center which features up to two kilometers of cross-country ski trails plus several miles of nearby groomed and ungroomed wooded ski trails including the North American Vasa Pathway. Also off-property and nearby, downhill skiers and snowboarders can enjoy packed and groomed slopes, challenging moguls and half pipes. Other winter activities on resort grounds include snowshoeing, ice skating, snowmobiling, and nearby horse-drawn sleigh rides.

SPA GRAND TRAVERSE and HEALTH CLUB: Grand Traverse Resort & Spa’s 100,000 square-foot indoor/outdoor Health Club provides guests with a variety of recreational activities. The highlight is Spa Grand Traverse, a two-floor, 11,000-square foot area dedicated to 21 treatment areas including more than 15 personal treatment rooms. Spa Grand Traverse's signature treatments are cherry-themed, in recognition of Traverse City as the "Cherry Capital of the World." In addition, the full-service spa features a relaxation room, a hair styling salon, men’s and women’s saunas.  Other Health Club facilities include locker rooms, an aerobics/yoga studio, cardio-theater with 20 work-out machines, and a weight room featuring Cybex® equipment.

In addition, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, whirlpools, pro shop, and game room round out the Health Club facilities. The staff includes personal trainers and certified aquatics instructors. Organized year-round activities include a variety of mind and body fitness training for individuals and groups including, but not limited to yoga, tai chi, body sculpting strength training, water-based aerobic exercise, swimming instruction, and year-round sports.

 

TENNIS: The Health Club also features a tennis center with four outdoor and five indoor tennis courts. The courts are surfaced with Deco-Turf II. Full-time tennis professionals provide private and group tennis instruction for adults and juniors. Tennis Magazine has recognized Grand Traverse Resort & Spa as one of nation’s Top 50 Tennis Resorts and the Resort’s Director of Tennis was named the 2003 and 2005 Michigan Professional of the Year by the United States Professional Tennis Association.

CHILDREN’S CENTER: The Cub House, a 2,000 square-foot children’s center is located adjacent to the Spa Complex. The Cub House offers an extensive selection of organized, well-supervised, children’s activities and is fully licensed by the Michigan Department of Social Services to provide daycare.

The Resort’s Camp Traverse offers summertime day camp activities for children ages six-12. Twenty-four hour babysitting services are also available. An arcade game room provides an added diversion for kids of all ages.

SHOPPING: The Resort’s 20,000 square-foot Gallery of Shops, located on the lobby level of the Tower, features 12 attractive upscale shops offering a choice of exceptional regional, national and international gifts, arts and crafts, men’s, women’s, and children’s apparel, sundries, and take out foods and snacks.

Other on-property retail stores include the Pro Shop in the Clubhouse, and a Retail Boutique in Spa Grand Traverse.

CONFERENCES AND GROUPS: Grand Traverse Resort & Spa offers 85,000 square-feet of versatile meeting space for groups ranging in size from 10 to 2,500. The resort’s experienced conference planning staff is ready to assist groups with individually tailored meeting agendas.

Governors’ Hall offers 20,160 square feet of group space with 20-foot ceilings, state-of-the-art conference equipment, and a projection booth. The resort’s flexible conference facilities can also be divided into 34 separate meeting rooms of varying sizes. The Resort’s indoor tennis courts are available for use as two separate exhibition halls totaling 30,000 square feet. Accessible by enclosed walkways, both halls feature a 30-foot ceiling for the most dramatic of events.
