The Red Wings will kick off their annual NHL Training Camp with the 16th Training Camp Golf Classic, presented by Eitel Dahm Motor Group, on Thursday, September 18, here at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa. Proceeds from the tournament benefit Involved Citizens Enterprises (I.C.E.), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization providing affordable skating programs to Northern Michigan.

Michigan Schooner Fest 2014 is scheduled for September 19-21 and will include a parade of tall ships on Friday, Sept 19 and two days of deck tours, cruises aboard the sailing vessels, and related activities at Clinch Park Marina and the Discovery Center Great Lakes dock across on S. Bay Shore Drive.

From Sept. 14-28, there are additional activities related to the maritime history of the area, including theatrical performances, movies, concerts, lectures, and other educational presentations. Many Michigan authors, historians, and craftsman will be participating.  There will be approximately 10 venues and a total of 30-40 individual events over a two-week period.

The first annual Empire Hops Festival will be held Sat., Oct. 4 on Front Street in the village. The festival promises to have "all the food, beverages, music and excitement of the Chamber's annual Asparagus Festival" celebrated annually in May.

The festival will feature New Holland, Right Brain, Stormcloud, The Workshop, Beards Brewery of Petoskey and Short's. Food vendors include Deering's, Joe's Friendly Tavern, Baytown Kitchen, Scalawags, Art's Tavern, food trucks and more.

The festival runs from noon to 10pm; admission is $10, which includes a commemorative beer glass and drink tickets.

Join Endurance Evolution for a scenic marathon and half marathon in the heart of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Both races start and finish in Empire, MI. The out-and-back marathon course will take runners by the “Dune Climb”, past Little Glen Lake, and through the village of Glen Arbor with breathtaking views of the Manitou Islands and Sleeping Bear Dunes along the way. The half marathon will follow the same course as the marathon, turning around at the 6.55 mile mark. At the peak of fall color season, the tree-lined course will be one that both runners and spectators won’t soon forget. Warm up for the 2014 Bell's Beer Iceman Cometh Challenge Mountain Bike Race with a practice ride guided by Einstein Cycles. There is no cost to participate in this event.Timber Ridge Resort will provide shuttle service to the Kalkaska Trailhead for $20 per person. Contact Timber Ridge Resort (231-947-2770) for parking and shuttle information. The 29-mile guided ride will begin at 9:00 a.m.

  • This is a group outing so Resort guests, local riders and out-of-town riders are welcome to participate
  • The purpose of this ride is for course familiarization and practice. It is not a race.
  • Ride will be led by Einstein Cycles (lead rider in front and back)
  • Bike tech service from Einstein Cycles will be available at trailhead prior to 9:00 a.m. start.
  • Approximate ride time is 4-5 hours.

WHY IS IT CALLED GEARS + BEERS?

Sponsored by Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, the Gears + Beers party is named so as there is a practice ride for the Iceman Cometh Challenge mountain bike race Saturday morning (led by Einstein Cycles) and Gears + Beers is the post party celebration. You do not need to participate in the ride to attend the Gears + Beers party. The party is open to the public and ALL Resort guests.

 Tickets to attend the Gears + Beers party are $15 per adult and include 2 drink tickets (full pint pours) and a commemorative pint glass. Additional drink tickets are available for $5 each. Food is also available for an additional cost. Must be 21 or older to attend.

Simply put, the Mac & Cheese Bake-Off is a comfort food extravaganza! Area restaurants partner with one WOMP winery each to create a perfect mac & cheese and wine pairing, and participants get to vote for the best pairing, cheesiest, and people's choice. This annual event that boasts friendly rivalries has created its own following, including large groups and families in town for the Thanksgiving holiday, so tickets sell out quickly.

Tickets will go on sale online through MyNorth Tickets MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, for $40 each (with $3 processing fee). Cost includes commemorative tasting glass, (8) total 3oz. samples of mac & cheese (one at each winery), and one wine pairing at each winery.
