On To The Next Big Adventure

The Gallery of Shops at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa is a hidden gem and surprise amenity to many visitors. Retail Manager Diane Goodyear says that is one of her favorite parts about working there. “Seeing guests’ reaction to these eight unique shops is the best,” Goodyear says. “Everyone knows about our golf courses, the spa and Aerie on the 16th floor, but not everyone knows we have a mini-mall.”

Diane grew up in Indiana, but like many, vacationed in Traverse City as a kid. She says that is when she fell in love with the area and made it a goal of hers to live and work in this community one day. She achieved that goal and after several years of running her own business, her love for the area continued to grow when she took on a new position at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa on February 14, 2006. Diane was hired as a retail lead and given a big task right away – setting up and opening the newest store, Adventure North. “That will always be my favorite store to work in. I have such a special connection to it. I still find time here and there to go in and work with shoppers and on the register.”

After a successful opening, Diane kept asking her boss for more responsibility. She signed up for retail management training classes, completed purchase orders, went on buying expeditions to Las Vegas, and within two years worked her way up to the top as the Resort’s Retail Manager. Diane says she was constantly coming up with new ideas to improve the stores. Dylan’s Candy Bar, now Whirligig’s Candy & More, opened in 2010. In 2013 she opened the only stand-alone Mud Pie store and in 2015, Nature Life opened. “From small items guests need like toiletries and sunscreen to top brands like North Face, Brighton, Melissa and Doug toys, plus local foods and wines, the Gallery of Shops truly has something for everyone.” Over the years all the shops have received updates and been remodeled.

Diane says looking back on her 15 years, it has been fun to see how displays, clothing trends, accessories, and stores have changed, but the one thing that has not changed is the feeling of family. “I cannot say enough about the amazing staff, management, and ownership at the Resort,” says Diane. “This place is my home and family. The way they support and acknowledge you is unmatched.” After 15 years and thousands of guests served, Diane is heading into retirement and looking forward to spending more time relaxing, taking small trips, and spending time with her grandkids.

Congratulations and best wishes, Diane!
