Director of Tennis
George Lowe has 14 years of experience in the tennis industry as a USPTA and PTR Certified teaching pro and promoter of the game for the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Midwest Section. In 2019 George received the United States Professional Tennis Association “Michigan Professional of the Year” award.
George graduated with a degree in Physics from Kalamazoo College where he played tennis for the Hornets from 2000-2004, co-captaining the team to their 66th consecutive MIAA conference championship in 2004. George has worked as a teaching pro at the YMCA of Greater Kalamazoo and Deer Lake Athletic Club, as Head Tennis Pro at the Lawn and Tennis Club of North Carolina where he worked with section and nationally ranked junior and adult tennis players. As the Michigan Tennis Service Representative for USTA Midwest Section he was responsible for starting and growing community tennis programs across the state of Michigan. George joined the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa team in August 2017 and has enjoyed collaborating with the nationally recognized staff on exciting new tennis programming for members and guests.
Operations Manager, Director of 10 & Under Tennis
Lisa has been Director of the 10 and Under tennis program at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa since 2010. She is certified by the United States Professional Tennis Registry in 10 and Under tennis. Lisa has been the Traverse City Central JV Head coach for eight years and has worked with Grand Traverse Tennis Camps as an Instructor for nine years. She has worked with Traverse City Public Schools to help re-establish their after school tennis programs ranging from Second to Eighth grades.
Lisa previously taught tennis at the Livonia YMCA and was also in charge of their adult leagues and junior travel matches. For the past several years, she has been the Baird Cup coach for the girls 18s team that has traveled down to Illinois to play among the best in the Midwest. After moving to the Grand Traverse area in 2003, she appreciates the smaller, but passionate tennis environment that she has encountered in a place she now calls her home.
Assistant Head Tennis Professional
Josie is certified by the Professional Tennis Registry with a specialization in 10 and Under Youth Tennis.
She is a managing member of Tennis 1st, a tennis teaching system which has pioneered teaching methods for children ages 1-4.
Josie is a former #2 Singles Player and Captain of the Michigan State Women’s Tennis Team. She loves teaching youth and adults of all ability levels, and as a mother of three young children and a busy lifestyle, especially loves getting groups of women together to play tennis as a healthy outlet.
Assistant Head Tennis Professional
One of our most accomplished tennis professionals, Fernando Belmar is ranked in the Top Four in Spain in 14s and 16s. He is a Member of Spanish National Team in 14s and 16s, and is ranked among the Top 100 in the world in 18s. Fernando was a Florida State High School Champion who attended Michigan State University with a full athletic scholarship, where he was the top player in Singles and Doubles.
He currently has a Top 600 in the world in ATP ranking, was the Spanish National Champion in 2015 and Spanish National Finalist in 2016 for 50+. Member of Spanish National Team for 50+ and holds the #14 ranking in the world for 50+. He is a Certified Coach by the prestigious Sanchez-Casal Academy and is a Registry of Professional Tennis (RPT) Certified Coach. In addition to Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, he is a Tennis Professional at the Homestead Resort in Glen Arbor.
Assistant Head Tennis Professional
Dane’s love for tennis started at a young age while taking lessons at the Port Huron Tennis House. He went on to play 4 years of high school tennis at St. Clair High School, serving as team captain and playing #1 singles his senior year in 2009. During this time he spent his summers teaching tennis for a local tennis program.
In 2010, Dane earned a scholarship to Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Ml and played singles and doubles for LSSU for 4 years. He graduated with a double major in Business Management and Entrepreneurship in 2013.
Dane is currently a USPTA-Certified Professional and has the ability to teach adults and children of all ages and skill levels. He keeps up his playing skills by competing in USTA Tournaments around the area.
Hunter Bergsma comes to the Resort with a decade of experience teaching, including four years at the High Performance Institute in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has an innate ability to relate to people of all ages, intellects, and interests—communicating clearly and humorously to make lessons enjoyable and memorable. Hunter also has a deep understanding of the kinetic chain, and is able to build a sustainable contact point from the ground up. He loves giving students new tools, shots, tactics, and tricks to take their game to the next level.
Cliff Girard, “Mr. G,” played college tennis. He coaches Junior High, Junior Varsity, and Varsity teams. Cliff has been a Tennis Pro at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa for over 15 years, teaching all levels. He helps coach both boys and girls Varsity teams at Traverse City Central High School, he also works with students at Traverse City West and St. Francis High Schools to improve tennis specific skills and fundamentals as well as technical skills in both singles and doubles.
Mark is a long-time tennis professional and has been with Grand Traverse Resort and Spa since 2010. He also is a Tennis Professional at the Deer Lake Country Club in Clarkston, MI. He was the Boys Varsity Tennis Coach at Lasher High School in Bloomfield Hills and was the Head Tennis Professional at the Bloomfield Open Hunt Club.

Recreation Manager and Fitness Instructor
Andrea is a fitness enthusiast and healthy living advocate with a degree in Sports Medicine from Missouri Baptist University in St. Louis. She received a certification in 2017 through the American Council on Exercise as a Health Coach and is currently working toward a Fitness Nutrition Specialist Certification. After having four children and working to get herself in a more energetic and healthy place, Andrea has the knowledge and desire to help others become their strongest, healthiest selves.
Recently, Andrea has focused on helping motivate others to a better lifestyle through movement and using food to fuel the body. She loves empowering others by encouraging them to become more proactive in their own health and stepping out past the status quo. Instead of just letting life happen, they can begin to change their own health stories one choice at a time.
Fitness and Swim Instructor
An ACE Certified Personal Trainer, Beth has been coaching and training student-athletes since 2003. She was recently certified as a Body Back Instructor thru Fit4Mom and coaches classes there as well, giving her additional training and experience working with pre and post-natal clients. Her history of coaching swimming and water polo has given her vast experience in cross-training for strength, endurance, speed and agility, and injury prevention.
Beth loves fitness and keeping individuals and families active and their healthiest self, no matter what the age or ability.
Carla is an ACE (American Council on Exercise) Certified Personal Trainer who is passionate about helping others with their health and fitness goals. Her training has allowed her to set up physical training programs with an individual’s personal fitness goals in mind or to teach in a group environment.
Carla’s family have been members at the Resort for almost 15 years, which has allowed her to get to know many members and guests. She’s been able to work with so many wonderful people who have taken their health to the next level, whether that’s increasing strength, losing weight, recovering from surgery, or meeting an individual goal.

Denise takes a mindful approach to movement to help you find a still, clear, joyous state of mind while moving to build a range of motion, strength, flexibility, balance, and an overall healthier body. Stillness in Motion (SIM) is a proprietary style that brings together Denise’s training in yoga, meditation, group fitness, somatics, paddle boarding, pole fitness, coaching, and intuition. Denise provide a positive and encouraging environment where students can leave their worries at the door, focus on their health, be mindfully and safely challenged, and find Stillness in Motion.
SIM provides a way for you to find your roots and wings through an individualized approach that will assist individuals in living healthier lives and achieving personal goals by becoming grounded and less stressed through a fun fitness modality. Denise believes in taking time for self-care of the body and mind in this technology-based and constantly forward-moving world is a key root to living a rich and fulfilling life.
Denise brings years of experience and knowledge from various fitness modalities and amazing teachers to provide a positive and light attitude to all her classes.
Sara loves fitness and health! She also loves working with individuals of all fitness levels, helping them achieve their goals, and working with them on their nutrition. Sara attended Grand Valley State University, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, where she specialized in working with the elderly, pregnant women, and children.
Sara has been personal training and teaching fitness classes for almost 10 years. She has worked at different gyms and health clubs in the area and would love to help anyone who would like to become a healthier individual!
Kathryn Baylis Monteith, PT, MA, GCFP
Kathy is a licensed Physical Therapist with over 25 years of experience treating individuals with
orthopedic and sport related injuries. After receiving her Bachelor of Science and Certificate in Physical Therapy from the University of Michigan, Kathy went on to earn her Masters in Health Care Administration from Central Michigan University.
Kathy is a fully certified Polestar Pilates Instructor and has also completed an intensive four-year program to become a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner. She has been leading group fitness classes since 1998.
As a wellness and rehabilitation professional, Kathy stays up-to-date through regular continuing education programs in Pilates, Feldenkrais, and Physical Therapy. Her unique integration of these techniques allows individuals at all levels of conditioning to safely participate in exercise while maximizing their function through movement-based learning and awareness.
