Things to Do in the Winter In Traverse City | Off-Property Activities

Mt HolidayGo Skiing or Tubing

If you prefer to spend your winter whizzing down the slopes, make sure you visit Mt. Holiday Ski & Recreation Area. Mt. Holiday offers downhill skiing, snowboarding, and tubing. The Resort offers complimentary shuttle rides to Mt. Holiday, which is just 10 minutes away. Call us at 231-938-2500 for details.

Take a Sleigh Ride

Each year when the snow hits the ground, our neighbors at Antler Ridge Farms begin offering horse-drawn sleigh rides. Let their beautiful Percheron draft horses Dixie and Danny pull you through the woods with a stop for a great bonfire, hot chocolate, and, of course, marshmallows to roast. Call (231) 645-3647 for more details.

Fat Bike in Winter

Explore the Vasa Trail

Looking for groomed trails for fat-tire biking or cross-country skiing? The Vasa Pathway features a series of well-marked loops (3K, 5K, 10K, 25K) that offers cross-country skiers, runners, hikers, mountain bikers, walkers, and naturalists a variety of challenges from easy to difficult.

Fat-tire bike riders can hit the Winter Sports Single-track trail, a multi-use trail ideal for winter biking and outdoor recreation. Make sure to check out a grooming report for the best conditions.

Rent Snowmobiles

If you prefer your winter sports motorized, head to Snowblitz Rentals for snowmobile rentals. Northern Michigan is home to a vast network of snowmobile trails that can be accessed from most rental locations.

Snowshoeing

Explore the National Lakeshore

Park rangers say, “Let it snow!” so you can explore Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on snowshoes this winter! In addition, guided snowshoe hikes will be offered as long as conditions permit. Check with the park for dates and hours. Park rangers will help participants learn about the park’s unique features and winter’s effect on them by exploring and discovering clues on-site.

There are also plenty of trails that you can explore with skis or snowshoes at your own pace. In addition, the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail is groomed all winter to provide a great surface for fat-tire biking, skiing, and cross-country skiing.

Go Wine Tasting in Snowshoes

There are a number of wonderful ways to snowshoe your way through northern Michigan, and two of our favorites involve wine. Hit the trails with the Old Mission Snowshoe, Wine & Brew Trail or head to Black Star Farms for Snowshoes, Vines & Wines!
